Growing tall and big fast is deadly

For Chinese, there’s one phrase that is commonly used to greet young children – especially during a child’s birthday or the Chinese New Year.

The phrase is “kuai gao zhang da.”

It is translated as grow tall and big fast.

Parents always wish children could grow taller and bigger on the fly. The faster they mature the better.

The Curious Case of an Overworked Mother

My friend related her concern to me one day.

“I am so worked up getting ready in the morning,” as she told me recently.

She is a working mother and has a preschooler.

Every week day, she has to get herself ready for work and get her daughter ready for school.

Since this is what almost every working parent does, I was curious to find out the cause of her challenge as she only has one child as old as K.

Lessons learned after second heart attack

I was talking to one of my favorite nasi lemak sellers the other day.

He told me he was in the hospital and was recently discharged.

“What happened?” I asked curiously.

Apparently he had heart attack – for the second time.

He told me he experienced excruciating pain in the chest and had difficulty in breathing before being hospitalized.

You see when I meet someone who experienced something bad, I always like to find out what he learns from the event.

Let them cry, baby

Her father is diagnosed with cancer. And she is only 10 years old.

The doctor says her father only has about 6 months to live.

She’s worried what is going to happen when her father passes away.

In fact, what makes her worry is not her but her mother.

She is concerned about her mother who might be taking up extra responsibilities as single parent. Will she cope?

With all the worries that she has, she doesn’t know how to express to her mother.
