Scientist invents computer pillow to stop snoring

October 3, 2007 By PW Editorial Team

A German scientist has come up with a solution for snoring–a computerized pillow that shifts the head's sleeping position until the noise stops.

Daryoush Bazargani, a professor of computer science at the University of Rostock and the pillow's inventor, was displaying a prototype of his pillow at a health conference in Germany on Wednesday.

"The pillow is attached to a computer, which is the size of a book, rests on a bedside table, and analyzes snoring noises," Bazargani told Reuters.

"The computer then reduces or enlarges air compartments within the pillow to facilitate nasal airflow to minimize snoring as the user shifts during sleep," he said.

Vomiting and Diarrhea – A Family Affair

September 20, 2007 By Abel Cheng

What a week!

I have just recovered from vomiting and diarrhea. I got it since Monday. Trust me, you don’t want to go through this (forgive me if it sounds gross but that’s what happened):

First day: Vomited several times 8-10 times.
Second day: Diarrhea, 7-8 times. Mainly watery stools. Completely knocked out. Took a 3-hour nap.
Third day: Diarrhea, 3-4 times. Vomited once.
Forth day: Diarrhea once.
Fifth day: Hooray, solid stools. Started to crave for foods.

Sounds bad huh? There’s more.

Early rising no good for the heart: study

September 6, 2007 By PW Editorial Team

Generations have praised the wisdom of getting up early in the morning, but a Japanese study says early-risers are actually at a higher risk of developing heart problems.
The study, conducted by researchers from several universities and hospitals in the western Japanese city of Kyoto, revealed a link between wake-up times and a person’s cardiovascular condition.

"Rising early to go to work or exercise might not be beneficial to health, but rather a risk for vascular diseases," said an abstract of the study.

The study, covering 3,017 healthy adults aged between 23 through 90, found that early risers had a greater risk of heart conditions including hypertension and of having strokes.

Miscarriage risk increases if parents smoked

August 30, 2007 By PW Editorial Team

Women who were exposed to their parents’ smoking as children may have a higher likelihood of suffering a miscarriage, new research suggests.

In a study of nearly 2,200 non-smoking pregnant women, researchers found that those exposed to their parents’ secondhand smoke during childhood were 80 percent more likely to have a miscarriage compared with women whose parents didn’t smoke.

The findings appear in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

MRI scans might prevent breast cancer, study shows

August 9, 2007 By PW Editorial Team

MRI scans may offer a new way to detect breast cancer at its earliest stages and perhaps even prevent cancer among high-risk women, European researchers said on Thursday.

Details of a German study show that magnetic resonance imaging was better than standard mammograms, a type of X-ray, at detecting a nonmalignant tumor called ductal carcinoma in-situ, or DCIS.

This could give surgeons time to remove the lesion before it can turn cancerous.

The findings, published in the Lancet medical journal, suggest that MRI should be tested in more women to see if it should become a standard screening tool, said Dr. Carla Boetes and Dr. Ritse Mann of the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre in the Netherlands.
