How NOT to motivate your child during exams

“Son, if you are Top 2 in the whole school, I’ll buy you an iPad.”

She’s having exams now. J related this to me a few days ago. This was exactly what the father of her classmate said to his son.

Don’t ask me why #2 and not #1 or #5. I don’t know. Go ask J’s classmate’s father.

Anyway, at a glance, the statement looks okay although it sounds like a bribe. Many parents say that. I heard of it even when I was a student then.

Is your child a spoiled brat in the making?

I first heard of this crazy thing a few years ago when my friend told me about it.

I couldn’t believe what I heard then. I was floored, to say the least.

In this case, my friend told me his friend sent a maid to accompany his son to study in the US.

And just a few days back, I read an article about how undergraduates of Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University brought their maids from home to help clean hostels for them. [Read more…]
