How I helped my child overcome fear

March 25, 2013 By Abel Cheng

Here’s the thing:

1. The venue is just 5 minutes’ drive from my home
2. It’s something I am interested in
3. And most of all, it’s free

I am talking about a parenting talk that came to my neighborhood last weekend.

I wanted to go but there’s a problem.

I don’t want to bring J and K along. Reasons being: they obviously are not interested and they would get bored and make noise.

My wife and I started our “negotiation” with the kids a day before. We didn’t want to take them to the talk. In fact, we could send them to their aunt’s house but she was not free. [Read more…]

What this Bond girl can teach your child about life

March 16, 2013 By Abel Cheng

C’mon guys, what comes to mind when you think of Bond girls?

Sexy, tall, blonde, seductive, smart, splendid figure, beautiful?

Off all, one Bond girl caught my attention lately.

At least not from any recent James Bond’s movies.

In fact, I don’t really know her until I read an article about her.

Once again, not her half-naked picture that caught my attention but what she said and how she lives her life.

Not only about Bond girls, but almost all celebrities live extravaganza lifestyle.

But not for Olga Kurylenko. [Read more…]

Tanjung Sepat Day Trip 2.0

March 13, 2013 By Abel Cheng

During a long weekend  in January, we had an impromptu plan.

After almost 3 years since our first visit (you can read about it here), we made another trip to this authentic village that is full of local culture that is called Tanjung Sepat.

Since this trip is a sequel, hence it is called Tanjung Sepat Day Trip 2.0.

Compared to the last, this trip we were more prepared. We did some research. We even found a Tanjung Sepat map that highlights all the interesting places.

From our home, it only takes about an hour to reach Tanjung Sepat. Since we started our journey early in the morning, we still had time to try out the famous Seafood Bak Kut Teh for breakfast. [Read more…]

Discrimination starts at home and school

March 6, 2013 By Abel Cheng

During recess, K was having his snack with his usual group of friends in school.

I guess there are limited tables so they had to share table with another group of students – who were not part of K’s gang.

There was a vacant seat next to K.

But one student refused to sit.

He reasoned, “Oh no, he is Indian and I am not going to sit next to him.”

Obviously he was referring to K who is a little tanned, as the Indian boy.

K overheard and related the story to us. We took it as a joke – especially on his skin color.

But it is NOT a joke if you look deeper. [Read more…]

Family Trip to Taiwan

February 28, 2013 By Abel Cheng

Taiwan trip

During the last school holiday in December 2012, we went to Taiwan for vacation for a total of 13 days.

My parents-in-law came along. After searching for a private driver and booking accommodation, we were ready to embark on an interesting adventure by touring the country of 23 millions people.

It’s time consuming to look for places to stay as we don’t want to end up staying in a place where it’s dirty and unsafe. We made our choices based on the reviews by past customers. To make things worse, all communication is conducted in Mandarin though there are some customer service officers who are fluent in English.

Taiwan is generally a safe country and the people are friendly and helpful. The place is clean and the people are very particular about the environment. Of course, you will never go hungry as the country is full of yummy snacks that you can enjoy – and some of them are shared with you here.

We toured Taiwan from the East to the South, and from the West to the North. It’s an anti-clockwise trip of the Island.

Overall, it was an exciting trip for us and we have learned the way of living, food, and culture of the Taiwanese people.

Since we already briefly know what Taiwan is about from this trip, we might go to Taiwan again but this time we will choose to stay in one place and explore the place in more detail. Hmmm… perhaps Cingjing Farm (清境農場).

(I have also written some interesting facts about Taiwan if you’re interested.)

Here’s the rundown of what we did, places we visited, food we ate, and where we stayed during our visit to this island that was formerly known as Formosa. [Read more…]
