When your child writes his first love letter…

August 2, 2013 By Abel Cheng

“When will a child fall in love?”

Honestly, I chucked this question in a remote corner of my mind thinking that it was still unrelated to my current situation.

As J and K are only 10 and 7 respectively, it seems very remote that I have to ponder and explore this mind-boggling question. Not at least 5 or 10 years later.

Boy, was I wrong!

Yesterday, K approached me before school and said, “Dad, do you know how to make an envelope?”

“Sure.”  [Read more…]

The Most Dangerous Myth About Parenting

July 24, 2013 By Abel Cheng

Most parents are caught unaware of this myth and they operate based on it religiously and wonder why they keep heading in the wrong direction in parenting.

It’s not their fault. They are conditioned to believe this dangerous myth to be the truth. They think that’s the way parenting should be.

Unfortunately, they will be in for a surprise. A big one… in fact.

What death can teach you about parenting

July 10, 2013 By Abel Cheng

Oh wait, not me! I am still alive and kicking!

On a more serious note, someone had died and came back alive. This is not a story I pick from a horror fiction but it’s a real story.

Anita Moorjani was diagnosed with cancer and she was confirmed by the doctor that her chances of survival was down to zero. She actually “saw” the other side and finally she decided to come back as she has to finish her unfinished jobs.

After going through near death experience (NDE), she has learned a lot about life. She is light and more carefree compared to the old Anita. She shared her NDE in a book called “Dying to be Me – My Journey from Cancer, to Near Death, to True Healing” – which has become a bestseller. And by the end of 2013, “Dying To Be Me” will be available in 32 languages.

I highly recommend this book.

On another note, Anita was interviewed by Alan Steinfeld and she touched on parenting. I thought it was great and you had to see this.

For your convenience, here’s the snippet: [Read more…]

J and K love animals. Dogs especially.

They have been bugging me to adopt one since a long time ago.

But I turned them down. Reason: too much responsibility.

Their life took a turn for the better when our neighbor brought home a Rottweiler puppy last February.

J and K immediately befriended the neighbor with the intention to get to play with the dog. [Read more…]

Banned baby names that parents use

May 3, 2013 By Abel Cheng

When you’re expecting next time, be careful how you name your baby.

There are rules that you can’t break.

Yes, even though it’s your baby but you can’t just name her/him as you wish.

And this includes promoting your baby to a higher ranking such as King or Queen.

According to the Department of Internal Affairs of New Zealand, it has released a list of baby names that put forward by parents but were rejected.

Reasons?

Too bizarre.

Too offensive.

Here are some examples of such names: [Read more…]
