I am still struggling with this…

August 14, 2013 By Abel Cheng

I am the first to admit that I am not a perfect parent.

I am still struggling with this…

I bought a copy of The Last Lecture at a book fair. The book is a transcript of a highly viral video on YouTube posted more than 5 years ago. Randy Pausch made the awesome speech before he died of cancer on July 25 2008.

(BTW, you can watch the video here)

I am aware of this story but a recent revisit reminded me of this challenge that I need to be conscious of… and hopefully get rid of in the future. [Read more…]

When your child writes his first love letter…

August 2, 2013 By Abel Cheng

“When will a child fall in love?”

Honestly, I chucked this question in a remote corner of my mind thinking that it was still unrelated to my current situation.

As J and K are only 10 and 7 respectively, it seems very remote that I have to ponder and explore this mind-boggling question. Not at least 5 or 10 years later.

Boy, was I wrong!

Yesterday, K approached me before school and said, “Dad, do you know how to make an envelope?”

The Most Dangerous Myth About Parenting

July 24, 2013 By Abel Cheng

Most parents are caught unaware of this myth and they operate based on it religiously and wonder why they keep heading in the wrong direction in parenting.

Oh wait, not me! I am still alive and kicking!

On a more serious note, someone had died and came back alive. This is not a story I pick from a horror fiction but it’s a real story.

Anita Moorjani was diagnosed with cancer and she was confirmed by the doctor that her chances of survival was down to zero. She actually “saw” the other side and finally she decided to come back as she has to finish her unfinished jobs.

Miraculously, despite what the doctors said, Anita recovered from her illness and she can’t feel any better.

After going through near death experience (NDE), she has learned a lot about life. She is light and more carefree compared to the old Anita. She shared her NDE in a book called “Dying to be Me – My Journey from Cancer, to Near Death, to True Healing” – which has become a bestseller. And by the end of 2013, “Dying To Be Me” will be available in 32 languages.

I highly recommend this book.

On another note, Anita was interviewed by Alan Steinfeld and she touched on parenting. I thought it was great and you had to see this.

For your convenience, here’s the snippet: [Read more…]

How to turn boring money lessons into a lively one

June 26, 2013 By Abel Cheng

When you tell this magnificent advice “Save for a rainy day” to Gen Y and they will look at you like you are a three-headed alien from space.

They don’t understand why you want to save while money is meant to be spent after all. And to them, making purchases by taking up credit is a norm to them.

I don’t know about you but I feel that Gen Y and I have different values in money and finances.

They want to spend everything they have without thinking about the future.

That brings back to my point of this post. [Read more…]
