Internet Safety for Kids: Does Your Kid Make These Mistakes?

October 4, 2007 By PW Editorial Team

Shannon could hear the footsteps behind her as she walked toward home. The thought of being followed made her heart beat faster.

“You’re being silly,” she told herself. “No one is following you.”

To be safe, she began to walk faster, but the footsteps kept up with her pace. She was afraid to look back, and she was glad she was almost home.

Shannon said a quick prayer, “God please get me home safe.”

She saw the porch light burning and she leaned against the door for a moment, relieved to be in the safety of her home. She glanced out the window to see if anyone was there. The sidewalk was empty.

After tossing her books on the sofa, she decided to grab a snack and get online. She logged on under her screen name, “ByAngel213”, checked her Buddy List and saw “GoTo123” was also on. She sent him an instant message:

Be Careful What You Say to Your Child – You Could Ruin His Life

October 2, 2007 By PW Editorial Team

Do you know what parents say to their children when they are small could have an impact on the future of the children?

I do. However, to the shock of my life, the impact is bigger than I originally thought.

This revelation dawned on me when I heard two true stories. Both gained enlightenment on their underlying problems after attending a workshop.

I hope, after reading these stories, it’s enough to convince you that you must be very careful with what you say to your child. As this has a huge relationship how your child handles himself in the future, whether at home or office.

Reading Baby Body Language: The Basics

September 27, 2007 By Ann Douglas

Your baby didn’t come packaged with an owner’s manual, but her body language can tell you plenty, including what she wants and needs from you. Some of those early body signals are hard-wired—more instinctual than intentional—but as grows little older she’ll use her body language to communicate a whole lot more. Here’s a quick guide to baby body language.

“One moment my one month old will be almost asleep. Then suddenly, for no reason at all, she’ll fling her arms and legs out and start wailing.”

Your baby is startling in response to a noise or a movement. Try blocking out some of the background noise (a white noise machine works amazingly well) and swaddling your baby in a light-weight blanket so she’ll be less likely to startle herself awake. By the time your baby is five or six months old, your baby will have outgrown this particular reflex and sleeping more soundly.

5 Essential Ways of Dealing with an Angry Child

September 19, 2007 By PW Editorial Team

Sometimes parents feel that children don’t have a right to express their anger or frustration and they’ll instead term it a tantrum.  It’s important to realize though that tantrums are the juvenile way of releasing pressure.  Whereas grownups might swear, yell, stomp feet and throw things – and come to think of it, that is a tantrum – children are rarely afforded the same opportunity without getting into trouble for their behavior.

For angry children, validation goes a long way to calming their behavior.  Showing your child that you understand why she is upset and trying to resolve it with her demonstrates that you are on her side.  As adults, we should be mature enough to not throw a tantrum in response – “Will you stop whining?  I can’t stand it anymore.”

Bed Wetting Solutions for Children

September 17, 2007 By PW Editorial Team

Bed wetting is a very common issue for children of all ages. It can be embarrassing for the child and frustrating for the parents. To help your child overcome bed wetting, you need to find a solution that you are both happy with. Your child will tend to have more accidents if they feel a great deal of anxiety over the situation. It is a good idea to start by having your child examined by a doctor. Some cases of bed wetting are the result of various medical issues.

Age and Stage

Once medical problems have been ruled out, you need to take the age of the child into consideration. Some children are able to be potty trained (here’s how to potty train your child in just 5 hours) at an early age, but their body hasn’t developed enough for them to hold their urine throughout the night. This can be handled by allowing the child to sleep in pull ups or plastic underwear until their body catches up with them.

Another suggestion is to keep the mattress dry all night with this Handy’s Plus waterproof pad. It’s an easy solution for bed wetting problems and the pad can absorb up to 6 cups of liquid.
