How I reward my children with a twist

I don’t do what most parents do. In fact, I do it the other way around. Sometimes, I don’t do it at all.

I am talking about giving rewards to children. Especially when it comes to motivating your child to achieve academic excellence.

(There are reasons why I don’t do it. To know more, read this past article:
http://www.parentwonder.com/how-not-to-motivate-your-child-during-exams/ )

I don’t motivate J and K with rewards to bribe for good results. I tell them to do the best they can. And to do it out their own motivation and willingness – at least not for some new, shiny toys.

This time is different. Even though I didn’t promise them rewards before the exams, we decided to reward them for their good results. [Read more…]

Children Lying

In the past few months, my parenting life was smooth and without any big challenge.

Life has its way. When you think you are having a good time, it wants to make it even more interesting.

Out of a routine conversation we had yesterday, I accidentally found out that J was lying to me. It’s about school exams. She contradicted herself and I picked it up like a policeman investigating a case.

Here’s the fact: As a parent, when you realize that you child tells a lie, it’s definitely heart-breaking. I am no exception. [Read more…]

Ed. Note: Matt Furey is a man of multiple talents. To begin with, he is a wrestler and Chinese kung fu master. He is also a bestselling author in the area of self-empowerment. It’s interesting to see a “violent” guy talks about spanking. With permission, I have reproduced his article on how he handles spanking. Read on to find out what he has to say.

Over the past two weeks I’ve been listening to accusations of child abuse involving NFL running back Adrian Peterson and his four-year old son.

The allegations go way beyond a slap or swat on the rumpus. Word is that the boy sustained welts and bruises all over his body. Some of the wounds supposedly drew blood.

Last Wednesday, whilst driving to practice Tai Chi, I turned on the radio and instead of music, I listened to a call-in show. Guess what the topic of conversation was?

“Should you spank your child and if you do, when does a spanking cross the line and equal abuse?” [Read more…]

Born in Malaysia: Malaysian Legacy on Print

Born In Malaysia book cover

I love things that bring nostalgic feelings. That’s why this exhibition drew my attention.

While it was still on, I took time out to visit “Born in Malaysia” photo exhibition in one of the art galleries.

What a pleasant surprise. I met the photographer – the man behind the project – at the exhibition. He took us around and explained to us the stories behind photos that he took around Malaysia.

Key to overcoming shyness in children

August 1, 2014 By Abel Cheng

Shyness

I didn’t expect this to happen so soon. Especially judging from the introvert nature of J.

When she was much younger, J needed much time to get along and socialize with someone she had not seen before. Betting her to go crazy playing with someone she hardly knew would have left you shirtless.

All these and more have changed. I am not saying that she is highly sociable now but she’s at least much better than before. [Read more…]
