Parents sometimes need to be cruel for the good of their children

One of the hardest things to come to terms with when you become a parent is the realisation that sometimes you are going to feel you are mean, or even cruel.

It is not that you are going to cause your children physical pain, but sometimes you have to allow them to try things out even if they fail in their attempts, or even miss out on things.

I have recently learnt a very important thing about myself – I am very task orientated. I love interacting with my children, but I am not too good on free play and just hanging out. On the road with kids – Seven useful tips

My children have always travelled well. I’ve pinned it to the fact that the first few years of their lives were spent on long trips everywhere as we lived so far away from any centre. To get the milk alone was a 20-minute drive into town!

Now, that we are urban dwellers, most of our journeys are short ones, but during the last three weeks, we’ve embarked on long three-hour-or-more journeys and I was amazed at how well the eight-, six- and three-year-olds coped.
