School is a prison!

October 16, 2013 By Abel Cheng

All this while, I feel something is amiss with our current education system.

But I don’t know what it is. And I have problems describing the situation too.

Fortunately, I was introduced to this perfectly written article that sums up what I feel.

It struck a strong chord in me and what the author proposes should be the way our school’s future direction. [Read more…]

Death is part of life

September 18, 2013 By Abel Cheng

You might not agree with me but besides sex, death is the most taboo topic for parents.

Where’s the fun of discussing about death, you ask.

As far as I am concerned, there’s no such thing as off-limits. I will do my best to adequately address my child’s curiosity to find out about certain thing.

Avoiding taboo topics is not the way. You have to explain to them accordingly when the need arises.

Death included. Something different about death is when you learn more about it, the more you discover about how to live your life with purpose… become more compassionate and less calculative. [Read more…]

If you have been following my story, we have quite a bit of challenge with J’s piano lesson.

For as long as I can remember, she doesn’t seem to have found the “oomph” to learn piano.

In a rare opportunity, we took J and K to a book signing ceremony last Sunday.

Why rare? Because it’s hard to come across an author who is loved by them and is willing to do the autograph at the same time.

It turned out to be an exciting event for the kids and even for me. The crowd was manageable and we had the chance to ask the author anything we wanted and took pictures.

The problem is J and K only started to “love” this artist-cum-author a few weeks ago. Even though they knew about Cheeming Boey‘s first book “When I was a kid” long time ago, it was not time yet for them to pick it up and read. [Read more…]

Are you a TV addict?

August 23, 2013 By Abel Cheng

If you are, chances are, your child is too.

No, I didn’t conduct any survey or something like that to come to the conclusion.

It just based on my observation that if a parent is glued to the idiot box, your child will draw entertainment from it too.

I could be wrong but…

I have many parents complain their children watch too much TeeVee.

What they don’t realize is the principle of “monkey see monkey do” at work. The child just follows what the dad or mom do. [Read more…]
