Scientists have identified a gene that causes diabetes in children, which will increase the chances of preventing the condition.
Doctors hope they will soon be able to test infants for the gene, codenamed KIAA0350, and treat them for Type 1 diabetes, known as "insulin dependent diabetes", before it takes hold.
By the time of diagnosis, most of the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas have been destroyed, which makes genetic prediction vital.

Gerber Products Co. recalled all packages of its organic rice and organic oatmeal cereals Friday because of potential clumping, which can pose a choking hazard.
Gerber said it has received complaints of choking but no reports of injury.

They, along with schools, are having to teach earlier lessons on safety, etiquette and balance with offline activities.

Borders is removing "Tintin in the Congo" from the children's section of its British stores, after a customer complained the comic work was racist, the company said Thursday.
David Enright, a London-based human-rights lawyer, was shopping at Borders with his family when he came upon the book, first published in 1931, and opened it to find what he characterized as racist abuse.

In a study of 138 children, researchers found that it wasn't only the children's exposure to stress, but their bodies' reactions to the stress, that affected their future behavior.
Young children who had both a stressful home life and an exaggerated nervous system response to stress were more likely than their peers to develop behavioral problems over the next six years.

The son of Dan and Leslie Falkner was born July 7, 2007, considered by many the luckiest day of the century.
But Jack's luck didn't stop there. The infant weighed in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Chippewa Falls.

The first baby created from an egg that had been matured in the laboratory, frozen, thawed and then fertilized, was born in Canada, scientists announced today.
The baby girl marks the first in what the scientists hope will be a viable option for women who become infertile due to certain types of cancer or polycystic ovary conditions in which liquid-filled sacs called cysts accumulate on the ovaries.
