SAHMmy Says: Aren't parents who don't use car seats taking their child's safety a bit too far?

Amy: Wow! What a success story with car seats. Plus a whole bunch of ideas to keep your child occupied in the car. I am really impressed with your 14 hour trip in France. Amazing. - Abel

I've always talked to my kids in the car. We look for trains, diggers (back hoes), school buses, dogs, kids, etc. We talk about the weather, what we're going to do that day, where we're going... We sing songs. They have never, NEVER ridden in the car without a car seat. I can't imagine.

My kids are only 2 and 6 months old, and they're both very good in the car. We took the older one to France when she was 13 months, and we all took a 14 hour road trip a couple months ago. If you look at car time as positive time to talk and be together, to sing silly songs and play games, it's fun. - Amy

It never occurred to me that someone would dare to NOT put their children in car seats until my sister moved to Alabama. She says nobody she knows there thinks anything of just letting the kids roam free during short trips down country roads. Coincidentally, she knows three families who have tragically lost little ones due to this practice. Thanks for getting the word out! - SAHMmy Says

Haha! Yeah, "hype" was the word I was looking for!

Getting them excited about it towards adopting the practise, isn't that straight out of Drucker's text books??

That was also what I did with her modified cot (under my Ergonomics category) & definitely other practices too. - JLow

Thank you everyone for the comments. I just hope with this post, I could help to make it easier for parents to use car seats for their kids. It's for their own safety.

JLow: What a great idea to "hype" up the use of car seats before the real thing. - Abel

We used the (1) method described above.

When we got the carseat home, I had placed it on the ground & made a fuss to my little girl like "Wow, look! you've got a special seat all for yourself!" & encouraged her to try it out by getting on & off (since it was on the ground, if she was apprehensive she'd get off easily) & practised putting on the seat belts.

It's a routine now without question. - JLow

i never even thought your post was going to be about carseats. we're having trouble keeping the 2-year-old sitting at the dinner table, that's where i'm going. my kiddos just accept their carseats because i certainly would never let them out!!!!! but thanks for the post, i agree that there are people who don't make this happen in their families. - phyllis

Wonderful post. Good tips. I am surprised at how many people don't consider carseat safety. I have four kids. Three are in five-point harnesses. One is in a booster seat. They just accept it as life. Thank you for helping to educate more people. - Nikki
