Great story, Valerie. I like it. As long as kids are exposed to different languages, they can pick up real soon. - Abel Cheng

From experience, i know the younger you are the faster you learn a language.

My family only spoke English but my Grand ma came to live with us when i was 3 and she spoke in Portuguese to her daughter (my aunty) all the time. At first i remember that i didn\'t understand what they said then one day, (i think i was about 5), i realized that i could understand a little of what they were saying. Then later when i was around 9-10 i suddenly realized that i could even speak it! They spoke to us in English but by them talking to each other around us, my siblings and i picked up the language. Now, I and my grandma speak it all the time!

My Grandma mixes her languages sometime in one sentence she\'ll use English, Malay language and Portuguese! e.g. \" Tengok itu, the sky, gelap! surely going to chuwek.\" which is \" Look at the sky, dark! surely going to rain.\"
my daughter lives with me and my grandma she\'s 2 1/2 and she understand English as i speak to her in English and she knows a few words in Portuguese and a few words in Malay.

To me I feel children will learn in language grammer wise in school too so at home we dont have to worry much other then speaking in the proper language context. - Valerie
